Furry Creek Emergency Quick Sheet

Print double-sided. Keep one on the fridge, beside the phone, and in each grab-and-go bag. Official instructions come from 9-1-1, SLRD, and emergency responders.

Fire, medical emergency, police, downed power line, immediate danger.

Gas smell? Leave first, then call FortisBC 1-800-663-9911 or 9-1-1.

2. Official information

  • SLRD Alert: register for app, text, phone/landline, and email.
  • SLRD EOC: alerts/orders and emergency notices.

3. Evacuation

  • Alert: prepare to leave.
  • Order: leave now. Do not delay.
  • Rescind: return only after official notice.

4. Medical / AED

  1. Call 9-1-1; put phone on speaker.
  2. Start CPR if unconscious and not breathing normally.
  3. Send someone for AED while CPR continues.

5. Hazard quick actions

Earthquake: Drop, Cover, Hold On. After: check people, fire, gas, wires.

Wildfire: On alert, pack early. On order, leave immediately.

Flood/landslide: move away from creeks, slopes, and moving water. Do not drive through water.

Shelter-in-place: indoors, pets in, windows closed, outside air off.

6. Neighbour check-in

  1. Make your own household safe first.
  2. If safe, check the nearest neighbours.
  3. Ask: "Are you safe? Do you need 9-1-1? Do you need help leaving?"
  4. Share official information only.

Do not enter unsafe structures or move injured people unless there is immediate danger and no safer option.

Before the Emergency: Do These Now

A practical checklist for households, older residents, people living alone, and neighbours who may need extra support.

1. This week

  • Register for SLRD Alert in more than one way.
  • Write down an out-of-area contact.
  • Pack medications, glasses/hearing aids, ID, charger, and cash.
  • Put a flashlight/radio where you can reach them.
  • Ask two neighbours to check on you.
  • Make a pet/animal plan.
  • Know your water, power, gas/propane shutoffs.

2. Extra support needs

Write down anything helpers need to know:

  • Mobility aid / stairs / transport needs.
  • Medication, oxygen, dietary needs.
  • Hearing, vision, cognitive, language, or communication needs.
  • Pet or service animal needs.

5. If phones/internet fail

  • Use battery/crank radio.
  • Conserve phone battery: airplane mode; short check-ins.
  • If safe and needed, go to your agreed meeting place or muster point.
  • Do not rely on social media rumours.

Volunteer through official channels

Interested residents should consider SLRD/Red Cross ESS, local fire service, first aid, or radio training rather than creating a parallel emergency program.

6. Home safety reminders

  • Secure tall furniture.
  • Strap water heater.
  • Store heavy items low.
  • Clear roof/gutters.
  • Move combustibles away from house.
  • Keep driveway/address visible.
  • Keep shoes by bed.
  • Keep go-bag accessible.
  • Practice leaving with pets.
